Getting to Milford Sound by Air
Several operators offer the chance to fly to Milford Sound, either in a small plane or in a helicopter. Flying to Milford Sound is quick and spectacular, but comes at a price!
The most common starting point for visitors wanting to fly to Milford Sound is Queenstown. Flights to Milford Sound depart from Queenstown Airport, although there are also flights from some other South Island destinations.
After taking off, your Milford Sound flight will take you on a scenic trip over lakes, mountains and valleys to your destination. Not many visitors can say they have seen Milford Sound from the air – fly over its dense rainforest and see the incredible waterfalls as they tumble and gush down the cliffs, and follow the fiord out to where it joins the Tasman Sea.
You can choose to land in Milford Sound and experience a cruise before returning, or if you’re short on time you can take a shorter return flight and see Milford Sound from the air without landing.
